Greyfriars Bobby Monument
Location: George IV Bridge opposite Chambers Street.
OS Ref: NT 256 733
Sculptor: William Brodie RSA
Unveiled: 15th November 1873

No need to go into detail about this little chap, you all know the story.

The lane in the background with the bins leads to Greyfriars Church & Churchyard where his master was buried.

You can see the double trough clearly in this photograph. A drinking fountain for humans at the top and one for dogs at the base.

The pub behind this statue is now called 'Greyfriars Bobby's Bar' (or in my student days it was known to us as 'Rab the Dog'!) and has what I take it is the old sign when it was called 'Greyfriars Bobby Inn' above the door.

It also has this 'sculpture' of a penny-farthing too.

This fountain/ Statue is in the care of the City Council. Here's what it says on their website

Greyfriars Bobby

William Brodie RSA designed this drinking fountain at the instigation of Baroness Angela Burdett-Coutts, the wealthy daughter of a former Edinburgh Lord Provost. The Town Council granted her permission to erect the fountain opposite Greyfriars Churchyard where Bobby, a Skye Terrier, maintained a vigil at his master's graveside until his own demise. It was unveiled on November 15, 1873.

In 1957 the water supply to the fountain was discontinued due to public health concerns.

The main plaque on the fountain reads:

"A TRIBUTE TO THE AFFECTIONATE FIDELITY OF GREYFRIAR'S BOBBY. IN 1858, THIS FAITHFUL DOG FOLLOWED THE REMAINS OF HIS MASTER TO GREYFRIAR'S CHURCHYARD AND LINGERED NEAR THE SPOT UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1872 "
