The monument to Rob Roy Macgregor in Stirling.
Location: Albert Place, Stirling
Sculptor: Benno Schotz (1891 - 1984)
In his novel Rob Roy, Sir Walter Scott included antiquarian notes claiming that Rob Roy had unusually long arms, giving him an extended sword swing and so a considerable advantage in combat. The Estonian born Scottish artist Benno Schotz seems to have considered this in his approach to the work and it would explain the slightly unusual proportions of the sculpture. The quotation on the plaque is taken from the novel at the point when Rob Roy, who has so far been travelling in disguise, reveals his true identity.
The sword was missing for a number of years and its good to see it has been properly restored.
