Jim

I know you've been looking for the Barony Church in Edinburgh. Well this is where it was

I suspected something else may have been here before when I was looking for the church and I've had it confirmed tonight.

At the Disruption of 1843 former St Mary's members in Bellevue founded St Mary's Free Church later St Mary's UF Church and in 1929 when the reuniting of CoS and UF would have given two St Mary's they changed their name to the Barony Church (from the site of the first church in 1843).

The building was the pride of the Free Church when built seemingly and had a 180 foot tower but was plagued with problems in the mid 20th century and had to be pulled down in 1983.

Before that happened the church merged with St James' in 1933 but stayed at that site and then in 1956 with Hillside Church and moved to the Lady Glenorchy Church building

That's one move. The next move was in 1978 when Hillside merged with the current church Greenside. The building above was still used by the church until 1983 but was then sold and demolished apart from the facade.

So Greenside Church is the one to contact.

Thanks to the snappily titled

Jim

I visited Greenside not that long ago to get photographs of their war memorials and they were all very helpful so I'm sure you'll get plenty of information back.

I'm racking my brains to think if there was a plaque on the wall to a former minister. Something in the back of my head tells me there is but whether it is the Carrick one or not I don't know?

What I would say is they've gone to a lot of trouble to make sure they have all their war memorials displayed and if they didn't have the original they have a photograph which bodes well for you because you'd hope they'd show the same care for other memorials.

Greenside is a beautiful church and not too far away from my house so I'd be more than happy to go back again if you need any photographs taken.

Cheers

Adam
