Over the course of three years (2002-2004), twelve herms of Scottish poets were erected in Edinburgh Park - a large business park on the western outskirts of Edinburgh. Each herm has two plaques on its pillar - one about the poet, and the other with a piece of the poet's work.

On finding that these sculptures were more correctly called herms, I had to look up herm in the dictionary.

Herm - a head or bust (originally of Hermes, on a square base.

The herms, grouped by year unveiled, are as follows.

2002

Edwin Morgan (born 1920), by David A Annand DA

Hugh MacDiarmid (1892-1978), by Anthony Morrow BA Hons

Iain Crichton Smith (1928-1998), by Michael Snowden RSA RGI

Liz Lochhead (born 1947), by Vincent Butler RSA RGI

2003

Douglas Dunn (born 1942), by Michael Snowden RSA RGI

Hamish Henderson (1919-2002), by Anthony Morrow BA Hons

Sorley MacLean (1911-1996) by Bill Scott RSA

Tom Leonard (born 1944), by Alex Main BA Hons

2004

Jackie Kay (born 1961), by Michael Snowden RSA RGI

Naomi Mitchison (1897-1999), by Archie Forrest

Norman MacCaig (1910-1996), by David A Annand DA

William Sydney Graham (1918-1986), by Anthony Morrow BA Hons

Edinburgh Park is a pretty soul-less place so its great to see sculptures like this in such a public place. I hope the office workers appreciate what they've got.

Thanks

Adam
