John Mossman (1817 – 1890)
Although born in London in 1817, Mossman’s family moved to Glasgow in 1828. He was responsible for several of the public statues erected in Glasgow City Centre in the second half of the Nineteenth Century.
His father William had taught John and his brother George sculpture, and along with their architect brother William they ran the family’s monumental sculpture firm which continues to this day as J & G Mossman.
A lot of the headstones in Glasgow Necropolis and sculptural work on Glasgow’s public buildings were done by the Mossman family.
John Mossman was the man responsible for the pedestrian statues so I have singled him out here.
The Mossman Statues in Glasgow City Centre are:
David Livingstone, Cathedral Precinct
James Lumsden, Cathedral Precinct
James White of Overtoun, Cathedral Precinct
Rev Dr Norman Macleod, Cathedral Square
Thomas Campbell, George Square
Robert Peel, George Square
John Mossman was a founder member of the Glasgow School of Art
