Adam Brown

Eduardo Paolozzi was born in Crown Place, Leith, in 1924 and lived in Leith until 1940. He was interned until 1943 (and was lucky not to have died on the ‘Arandora Star’ when she was sunk taking his father, grandfather and uncle to Canada). After being released he studied at the Edinburgh College of Art for a year and then left Scotland in 1944. For the rest of his career studying, working and lecturing it was in other countries: England, France, USA and Germany.

He died in London after a long illness in April 2005.

He has two large public works in Edinburgh.

‘The Manuscript of Monte Cassino’ – a giant hand and foot in front of St Mary’s RC Cathedral.
‘Wealth of Nations’ – A large sculpture outside Drummond House at the Gyle.

He donated a large amount of his work to the National Galleries of Scotland in his later life and they are currently in the Dean Gallery, part of the National Gallery of Modern Art campus
