William Wallace Memorials, Ayr
Location: High Street, & Newmarket Street, Ayr
OS Ref: NS 338 218
Sculptor: Not Known
Architect: Not known
There two monuments are close together and the second has no information about it so I thought I'd post them together.
The first is the magnificent tower in the heart of old Ayr, half way along the High Street. The Wallace Tower is another of the 19th century memorials erected to William Wallace. This one has him in very fancy armour and helmet and a rather camp pose. Pure Victorian fantasy.
The second is just around the corner from the tower. High up on a wall above a shop in Newmarket Street. (actually more of a lane than a street) there is nothing to indicate why the memorial is there. Even though it doesn't say it. I am assuming it's a Wallace memorial because the style of the armour and helmet are similar to the statue on front of the Wallace tower.
