William Nelson Plaque, St Bernard's Well
Location: Beside St Bernard's Well, The Water of Leith walkway, Stockbridge
OS Ref: NT 244 741
Sculptor: One of the Rhinds
Situated on the steps beside St Bernard's Well Pump House. A magnificent pink granite memorial with bronze profile bust of William Nelson.
Nelson was the last private owner of the well. He paid for its renovation and bequeathed it to the city on his death.
"The Liberal Deviseth Liberal Things"
The letters are quite faded. It says.
"Erected by the
Lord Provost Magistrates and Council
of the City of Edinburgh
to commemorate
the public spirit and generosity of the late
William Nelson
of Salisbury Green who having purchased, restored and embellished
St Bernard's Well
and the surrounding grounds
gifted them to the corporation
for the benefit of the citizens of Edinburgh
in all time coming.
January 1888.
