Major General Hector MacDonald's Grave
Location: Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh
OS Ref: NT 237 740
Sculptor: Not known

A war hero in his day MacDonald commited suicide in 1903 after serious allegations against him were published in American newspapers.

I take it the carvings behind the bust of the highland bonnet and regimental colour are from his old regiment the 92nd Highlanders.

There is also a tower commemorating him in his birthplace of Dingwall.

I'm sure John Burnett wont mind me posting this image from his hosting account because Caroline Gerard sent me the same image at the same time.

It shows how much the Dean Cemetery has changed around this grave.

You beat me to it with this one.

There is something about this memorial, in a corner of the graveyard, surrounded by trees but it has a great presence and is well worth a visit.

The bust, and presumably the military items, are by (William) Birnie Rhind. Not sure about the mass of stone, though.
