Heave awa' Chaps, I'm No Dead Yet
Location: Paisley Close, Royal Mile
OS Ref: NT 261 737
Sculptor: John Rhind

Just up from John Knox's House.

On 24th November 1861, the seventeenth century tenement houses at Smith's Land at 99 - 103 High Street, collapsed.
35 people were killed but a young man was heard to shout out from under the rubble "Heave awa' chaps, I'm no deid yet".

When building was rebuilt the phrase and the young man's likeness was added above the close. Note Deid was replaced by Dead but they kept Awa'!
