The son of the famous architect, Robert Lorimer, Hew Lorimer (1907-1993) was born in Edinburgh. He studied architecture and sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art under Alexander Carrick, who taught him the methods of direct stone carving. Lorimer was influenced both by Romanesque church sculpture (after a trip to France in 1932 with Tom Whalen) and also by the English sculptor, Eric Gill with whom he studied in 1934-35
Lorimer is best known for his seven stylised, columnar figures* on the façade of the National Library of Scotland on George IV Bridge, Edinburgh.

* The NLS figures represent Medicine, Science, History, Poetry, Law, Theology and Music
