Sir John Steell was born in Aberdeen but soon moved to Edinburgh. He was later appointed Queen Victoria's Sculptor in Scotland, and sculpted several public statues in Edinburgh.

These include the statues of the Duke of Wellington at the East end of Princes Street, which gave us the phrase 'the Iron Duke in bronze by Steell', Alexander and Bucephalus in front of the City Chambers and the statue of Sir Walter Scott at the centre of the Scott Monument.

He was also responsible for the Prince Albert statue on the Prince Consort Memorial in Charlotte Square, Edinburgh. He was knighted after its unveiling.
