The Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) Boer War memorial
Location: Half way up the Mound at the junction with Bank Street
OS Ref: NT 255 736
Sculptor: William Birnie Rhind
Some old photographs of this memorial before it was renovated last year.
There is some good detail on the type of uniforms and equipment the Black Watch were wearing in the Boer War.
You'd probably get quite a good shot of the statue from the top of an open top tour bus. If you’re standing at the foot of the monument it is very difficult since it is beside one of Edinburgh's busiest roads.

Another memorial in the care of the Council. This is from their website:
The Black Watch War Memorial
The Black Watch War Memorial is a bronze statue of a kilted Black Watch soldier standing looking toward the Castle, on a square polished granite base, with the Black Watch crest "Am Freiceadan Dubh" above a frieze of fighting soldiers. Designed by sculptor William Birnie Rhind, R.S.A.
It commemorates General Wauchope and the men of the Black Watch regiment who fell in the South African War 1899-1902, and was commissioned by the Black Watch on a site given by the Bank of Scotland in 1906. Unveiled on 27 June 1910.
