The Pineapple (architect unkown) was built in 1761, undoubtedly as a retreat or folly where one could admire the garden - either from the portico or inside, depending on weather.

It stands 45 feet high from graden level and 37' high on the other side.

In the upper part, masonry has been designed and cantilevered, producing the realsitic effect of leaves and fruit. Four stone vases on top of the wall disduise the chimneys.

At garden level greenhouses extended east and west from the central portico. These greenhouses were heated by furnaces which circulated hot air through cavities between the suppost wall and it's brick lining.

The walled garden would have been planted in a typically Scottish manner, having fruit trees trained on the walls, with possibly others forming an orchard within. The central area would be divided into plots, with flower borders on either side of a grass patch. An early photograph shows the garden well maintained, with large window sashes forming a greenhouse on the side of the wall.

The Pineapple is owned and maintained by The National Trust for Scotland and can be rented as holiday accomodation.
