No. 42 St Andrew Square
Location: East side, St Andrew Square
OS Ref: NT 256 740
Architect: Arthur Davis of Mewes & Davis of London
This building was completed in 1942 as the National Bank of Scotland Head Office. It replaced an earlier Head Office building on the same site.
In 1969 the National Commercial Bank of Scotland (the National Bank of Scotland had merged with the Commercial Bank of Scotland in 1959) merged with the Royal Bank of Scotland and until the building of the Gogarburn Head Office buildings in 2007 was the Head Office of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group.
The building is currently owned by Vladimir Romanov who was wanting to make it into a hotel but it is currently sitting empty.
It has some nice touches.
A door with coin faces
The crest of the National Bank of Scotland
Nice decoration on the security bars of the window
