North Leith Cemetery
Location: Coburg Street, Leith
OS REf: NT 267 764

The Cemetery itself is in a pretty poor condition but there are some magnificent old headstones fading away.

I don't know if this was formerly known as St Ninian's Churchyard? I'm sure someone will put me right.

And even a relatively new stone has not escaped the Council's own vandals.

From this website about Minor Victorian Poet and Authors it has a page about Robert Nicoll

http://gerald-massey.org.uk/nicoll/index.htm

There is a transcription of an article by Samuel Stiles. I don't know when it was written

"The remains of Robert Nicoll rest in a narrow spot in Newhaven Churchyard. No stone marks his resting place; only a small green mound, that has been watered by the tears of the loved he has left behind him. On that spot the eye of God dwells; and around the precincts of the poet's grave, the memories of friends still hover with a fond and melancholy regret."

And

Ed.: Robert Nicholl was born in Little Tullibelton in the parish of Auchtergaven, Perthshire, in 1814, and died at Leith, where he was buried, in 1837. A prominent obelisk commemorates him in his home town.

I wonder if the Nicoll Obelisk is still in Auchtergaven?

Yes, also known as St Ninian's. The monks of Holyroodhouse had a chapel erected and dedicated to St Ninian in 1493. This pre-dated the instigation of North Leith Parish in the opening years of the 17thC.
