Hugh Miller Monument
Location: Cromarty
Sculptor: Alexander Handyside Ritchie
Contractor: Thomas Watson, Edinburgh
Unveiled: 1859.
50' high Greek Doric column surmounted statue of Hugh Miller raised on plinth dressed in cape and plaid with pile of books representing his works and geological speciment in right hand.
Laurel wreaths on 3 sides of plinth and representation of Miller's winged fish from the Old Red Sandstones of Cromarty on 4th.
Rusticated stone base with marble tablet.
Cast-iron railings. Base of Old Red Sandstone from Shore quarry and rest of yellowish sandstone from Daviston quarry. |
