St Andrew's House, Calton Hill
Location: Regent Road, Calton Hill
OS Ref: NT 261 740
Artists: various

A fantastic building on Calton Hill. At one time it was propsed to use it as the Scottish Parliament Building. personally I think it would have made great parliament with the debating chamber built at the back overlooking the city. However it wasn't to be.

Alexander Carrick was one of the principle artists working on this building and he is responsible for this coat of arms

He also did these six figures high up on the front of the building. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with a zoom lens so close ups will follow at a later date.

These doors are luckily closed at the weekend and can be seen as intended.

I don't know the artist but I don't imagine a goverment building being built now having Christian saints on its door.

It's blurred but these saints are St Kentigern and St Magnus

Some more stone carving here. There are two lions on the building. It was difficult to get a shot of this lion with the camera I had.

Carrick would have been well aware that his sculptures would not only be seen from the street, they would also be seen at eye-level from across the road on a path below Nelson's monument on Calton Hill.

This photo shows the rear of the building and you can't see the path but you can see how close the hill is.

Unfortunately trees now block the view from this path, I'm sure they didn't in Carrick's day.
The photos in the last post above were taken from the base of the Nelson Monument and the ones below from the street in front of the building.

These are the two central figures. Note the robes coming down the column supporting them

Thanks to Jim McGinlay for reminding me about the sculptor of the Lion & Unicorn. They were by Phylis Bone.

Regards
