GW

Many thanks for posting the Matheson monument.

The following description is taken from Elizabeth Beaton's 1995 book 'Sutherland and Illustrated Architectural Guide'

Grandoise memorial to Sir James Matheson (1796 - 1878), a Corinthian-columned domed marble three-bay loggia below which stands a square marble pedestal (A Veigl, Menton, France) with medallion (J E Boehm) depicting Sir James. The capitals are decorated with carved opium poppy heads, recording the commodity on which the Jardine Matheson Far East trading Empire was founded. The cosmopolitan sophistication of this monument is the quintessence of architectural surprise in the Highlands.
