And this is what the Council says about the Grove in its care.
Robert Louis Stevenson Memorial Grove
A simple upright stone set in a grove of silver birch trees. The stone is carved with 'RLS - A Man of Letters 1850 -1894' by sculptor Iain Hamilton Finlay. The Stevenson Society commissioned the memorial in 1987. Stevenson stated in his letters that he never wanted a statue of himself erected; therefore this small grove of trees below the castle is a fitting memorial.
Robert Louis Stevenson as a young boy was often ill and he developed a lively imagination which he translated into classic novels 'Kidnapped', 'Treasure Island', 'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' and many others. He was one of Edinburgh's most famous literary sons, who travelled much in his short life, ending his days in Samoa. _________________ Scottish War Memorials Project
