The Battle of Langside Monument

Location: Battlefield Place at the junctions of Battlefield Road, Langside Road and Algie Street, Glasgow.

The monument commemorates the Battle of Langside, 13th May 1568 in which the forces of Mary Queen of Scots were defeated by those of the Regent, Earl of Moray. Moray's forces were arrayed along the summit of the hill in the area of the Monument and Queen's Park while the Queen's forces attacked up the hill from the area now occupied by the new Victoria Hospital.

The monument was erected in 1887 to mark the 300th centenery of the death of Mary Queen of Scots. It was designed by architect Alexander Skirving who had worked as assistant to the famous Alexander 'Greek' Thomson.

Behind the monument stands the former Langside Hill; Church, also by Alexander Skirving.

The shaft is carved with the Scottish Thistle, English Rose and French Flleur-de-Lys.
