I'm not quite sure which of the trees planted around this memorial are the five which commemorate the dead school children.

A new school has been built on the playing fields of the 1960's school and that school has in turn been demolished to make way for new playing fields.

You can see the old school and the building of the new school in the Google Maps street view and it looks like the trees must have been moved as part of landscaping. (Assuming the trees had been planted before the new school was built)

These five trees
stand as a memorial to
the five Broughton High School pupils
who died together in a road accident
on March 13th 1990

Leif Rohde
Paul Taylor
Billy Feachen
Carol McGowan
Melody Mak

Two survivors tell of crash that killed five

CHRISTOPHER REEKIE

TWO survivors of a car crash in which five teenagers were killed described their experiences at a fatal accident inquiry yesterday in Edinburgh.

The five lost their lives in the smash in Queensferry Road, Edinburgh, on the evening of March 13. The BMW in which they were travelling towards the city was involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Cavalier travelling outwards.

Ms Julie Hounson, 26, of South Gyle Wynd, Edinburgh, a passenger in the Vauxhall, said that ''all of a sudden a white car was sideways in front of us''.

She did not see where it had come from. ''It was coming towards us and we were going to hit it and then we hit it.'' She remembered thinking ''that's it'' and being unable to move.

Ms Hounson received a broken right femur, a broken arm, and internal injuries, and was still off work.

Ms Kim Pfeiffer, 23, of Rowantree Grove, Currie, Midlothian, the driver of the Vauxhall, said that she remembered being in Queensferry Road but did not remember anything else until she awoke in hospital.

She was in hospital for three months and was still off work.

The five who died were Melody Mai-Yee Mak, 17, of Craigleith Hill Avenue, driving her father's BMW; Carol McGowan, 17, of Orchard Bank; William Feachen, 17, of Craigleith Hill Park; Leif Rohde, 16, of Carlton Place; and Paul Taylor, 17, Easter Drylaw Place, all Edinburgh. The first four were pupils of Broughton High School, and Paul Taylor was an ex-pupil.

Mr David Bolton, 42, of Lime Grove, Dunfermline, who was driving out of Edinburgh, said that he saw an approaching pale-coloured car cross the road and collide with another car on his side of the road.

The pale car was veering rather than turning. It was shifting its position from straight-on to sideways and still coming forward.

Mr David Garside, 42, who lives in Queensferry Road, said that he was driving into Orchard Road on his left when a car passed him at high speed.

He heard an engine and tyre noise, and then heard the sound of a collision. He did not know where the car had come from and had the impression it had driven from a side road.

Mr Garside thought that this car was travelling at 70 to 80 miles an hour and his impression was that it was out of control.

Mr Kenny Mak, a Chinese restaurant owner, said that his daughter, Melody, had passed her driving test in February and had driven his BMW a number of times. She was a cautious driver.

On March 13, she was driving her friends to their homes after a visit to Billy Feachen's home, he said.
