The King's Buildings were built as an extension to the Edinburgh University campus in 1930 - 1931.
There are several relief sculptures of animals above the windows of the zoology department by Phylis Bone, who had an international reputation as an animal sculptor.
The most notable sculptural feature is the relief of 'Geology' above the doorway to the department, by Alexander Carrick. The allegorical figure is seated on slabs of stone which take on the appearance of books, while studying the fossil of an ammonite, all in turn framed within a large ammonite. It also may be Carrick's own take on Rodin's 'The Thinker'. For more information on Alexander Carrick:
